@@6stringks Thank you. I confess fire scares me more than pirates. With pirates it is possible to keep calm and reduce the tension. With fire I suspect the only thing to do is to jump in the life raft and get as far away from the boat as quickly as possible! Possibly the other way round for you... Good fire suppressant systems. Pirates... Very difficult in the air!

Yes indeed, still an uncontrollable fire leaves you with a max. of 20 mins (they say) I would land in 5 if I can…Hijackers are not nice to have either. Decision making tho is always interesting. Probably a lot of times it comes down to do the „least wrong thing” in the time available- rather than striving for a perfect decision and refrain from jumping into the first solution and stay as calm as possible. I get carried away. Now I have to learn sailing first as I only had motor boats so far. All the best and always smooth sailing, Angel

I think that depends on your proven experience. I have made a circumnavigation and sailed some 58,000 miles in the Atlantic and Pacific and never had any problems chartering... The ICC shows a bare minimum of experience or knowledge which the charter companies will probably accept.

@@SailingGently I meant no harm when you referred to the US military as “Yanks”, I just haven’t heard that in a long time and I know you meant no harm either. I would have mentioned Germany and NATO too but I wrote my comment before NATO showed up. As for Germany, I think it’s great that we have all come together as allies and moved past what happened in the early 40’s. I know this is off-topic from your post but I just wanted to share with you my feelings and I’m sure you feel the same way. Since social media began, everybody has become friendly with each other online and in some cases physically too. Here in the states we were always taught that Russia was the enemy and that’s still true today so as a whole we disliked (or hated) Russia. Personally I have become very good friends with people in Russia, and I realized that they are the same as you and I. Our government teaches us differently. When war broke out between Russia and Ukraine, it really botherd me because it wasn’t the Russian people looking for war, It was the Russian government that started it. Everybody lived as friendly neighbors until one person decided to invade his neighboring country. Sometime I wish that before there was any war the citizens could have the right to vote on it. I know this is a little far-fetched but those people that we have become friendly with, are they now supposed to be our enemies? I hope you can understand what I’m getting at in. It’s kind of hard to explain online without writing a book. Take care and I’m so happy that nobody was injured or killed in the pirate attack on your boat.

For sure the canals are much cheaper and easier than the windward slog up the Portuguese coast. Shorter distance as well. At chalon keep going up the Saone north then branch off through the Ardèche into Belgium and eventually the big sea lock in Maastrich. (Spelling sorry!)

There is a 3rd company Called Bas Bos Logistics whose web site is American but are actually a Dutch owned shipping company. DYT are also a subsidiary of a huge Dutch shipping company and like Peters and May offer deck cargo for boats but also have 2 semi-submersibles where I think the boats skipper can sleep on the ship during the cerossin if, if cabin space is available and at an extra charge...

The good old days! I think my first was around 1985 ish and I parked up one night under the Eiffel tower and somewhere else on the other bank... Back then almost every lock had a lockmaster operating it... These days they are virtually all DIY automated locks.. I think the Avignon to Sete route is still beautiful and little used although Port Napoleon and Port st Louis are huge marina and boatyard complexes. Lucky you to be in Asia... I enjoyed Comodo, Bali and Phuket enormously and the courtesy mobo in Port Klang ? run by the yacht club...

Well Phil if you ever get back up here in the North the Canals are a superb experience. I didn't know Jeanneau were O'day's - lucky you to be sailing down there... I loved Phuket!

I always used to overnight from la Rochelle to Northern Spain... in the end easier than working the tides..

Interesting Richie, I have had the same issue...I used the boat less when it was 20 minutes away than I do now it's 2,000 miles away!

Domonic hi 1.8 metres on the MAIN canals is around the max but because heavily laden commercial barges frequently exceed this in the middle of the main canals its more.. The problem with being on or near the limit is this depth is less close to the bank when you want to park up overnight. Lots of boats go through at 1.8 provided there is not a drought

@@SailingGently Grabbed a brace of the books, if you were going to leave the boat on west coast of spain for the winter and get the hull painted, and hour form a usefll airport or high speed train etc with a view to maderia or canaries where would you rest up Micheal?

Difficult.. Coruna or Bayonne and get the train to the ferries around St Sebastian... Or Lisbon in portugal... Lots of marinas and nearer airports

As you are in your 60’s, i was wondering about the maintenance of a sailboat and the need to bring the mast down and up occasionally. I love the idea of “free” nautical miles and the beauty of sailing. But as an “older” guy without any boating experience (except an online educational course) the reality of a cabin cruiser seems much more convenient although more expensive per nautical mile for fuel. Would you sail or motor if you began your boating journey in your late 60’s? Enjoy the Caribbean, like you said you only live once.

These days I pay people to fix things rather than doing it myself. The cost of running a motor boat is horrendous and to be safe you need 2 engines. Sailboats costs are generally far less. I would only go for a mobo on rivers or lakes. 60 is young to take up sailing... why not do a short course with a sailing school and see how it goes...

I do wonder about our navy sometimes Stephen.. A frigate bashed into a german freighter in the channel, another hit coral (whilst anchored) in the great barrier reef, I was in Alderney when a fast patrol boat hit the harbor wall at speed .... and one managed to drift into tower bridge trying to turn round... All not very Hornblower or Nelson or Aubry???

@SailingGently When you sail down the Pacific Notth American coast (from Vancouver to Mexico), you encounter US Warships frequently, engaged in various training exercises. On C16 they will hail you, requesting you keep clear of them.. The impression I got was that the radio operators were barely older than 17 and the officers not much older 😀. So, the Royal Navy is not unique.

Probably too late when you've bashed into something on the way in before checking n at the capitainary!

It is a problem... I toss up between dodgy insurers offering full cover at the same price as established insurers.. and just 3rd party.. All mine exclude US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

Actually it is crowded here but there a thousands of anchorages and you can normally find a place to drop the pick! I think GPS and plotters has made boating easier and now all you need is dosh! But it is a wonderful pastime... I loved the Pacific and envy you!

@SailingGently I would agree with you but have also witnessed a lot of cruisers give up the lifestyle, as they hadn't figured on the amount of maintenance boats require (particularly in the warmer climates). Not everyone has the necessary appetite or skills and money only gets you so far.

Ultimately its boring as well... I think that's why there are so many RUclipsrs and if its not boring its frightening! Running costs are so high I agree... I have just replaced my furler as it jammed 2 days ago in 30 knots with all the genny out. That was challenging and the cost frightening!

@SailingGently The deal I have with my wife is that she joins me for the passages but I do the maintenance (which she finds boring) on my own. So far it is about 50:50 (maintenance : cruisjng).

Tony the prices change all the time.. keep asking for quotes from all 3 main shippers. I think 12k is a possible price..

Great mix of friendly people although its 80% French. All the trades people and staff speak English. Lots of Canadian and American boats and always a few Brits... Not many permanent UK people but a flow of visiting boats... Some private french boat owners speak english but that's the exception! In St Lucia 25 miles south everyone speaks or is english and the same with Antigua 150 miles north

To be fair Benny, the marinas are crowded and the more popular anchorages but there is always space and so many places... It's still easy to find idyllic spots

@@SailingGently suppose that’s a 40ft container with all the handling. I assume it’s 10k in labour alone to have it delivered on keel so not bad if all works out. Was going to say you probably need more solar and lithium but if you have a permanent berth no need. Have an awesome time. Gives one confidence time is not a constant

Not quite like that... The shipping companies select a route and if enough boats are interested they charter a ship... The price per boat seems to depend on that charter price which depends on world trade shipping prices at that time.. Prices when I started were 12,000 but then came covid and the hike in oil and shipping costs
